BrightonOne provides financial support to our Veterans in a place of need and youths who demonstrate exceptional leadership and academics.
BrightonOne Empowerment Fund
On July 30, 2015, the BrightonOne Board of Directors approved the establishment an empowerment fund to help reduce Veteran homelessness in and around Boston. The fund provides financial assistance to Veterans by covering housing-related expenses that are not met through public benefits or other funding sources.
The goal of the Empowerment Fund is to help address critical funding gaps that can prevent homeless Veterans from securing permanent housing, including those utilizing HUD-VASH housing assistance vouchers. By providing targeted support when other resources fall short, the fund helps Veterans overcome barriers to stable housing and greater self-sufficiency.
Costs considered under this fund are:
Security Deposits
Application fees
Past utility debt
Broker fees
Pro-rated rent gaps up to 15 days
Veteran’s portion of first month rent
The focus area for the Fund has been defined as the Greater Boston Area. Placement of Veterans in housing should be focused in Suffolk, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk or Plymouth Counties.
The maximum request allowance has been set at $2,000 per Veteran.

Arthur Berg Leadership Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2012 and is named in honor of Arthur Berg who retired from Brighton Marine after 37 years of dedication and commitment to the organization. From 2012 to 2017, the scholarship was awarded to a student in the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Brighton High School who demonstrated outstanding leadership, community service and commitment to their education.
With the closing of the Brighton High School JROTC program in the 2017-2018 academic year, Brighton Marine realigned its scholarship to East Boston High School JROTC. The scholarship assists awardees in achieving further success as they continued their education after high school graduation.
Scholarship History & Considerations
Arthur Berg started with Brighton Marine Health Center, Inc. in 1975 after serving in the Navy. The military gave Arthur the discipline and character to work within the organization’s facilities department and eventually advance to direct the entire department over many successful years. His efforts and contributions helped to keep Brighton Marine, a non-profit organization, thriving.
The ideal candidate for this scholarship is expected to demonstrate the same notable characteristics as Arthur. Successful recipients demonstrate exceptional performance in JROTC, academics, community service and leadership.
